Rev. Willie Lee Scrutchings was born April 3, 1928 in Akron, Ohio. He is the youngest child of the late Edward and Lillian Scrutchings, whom he loved deeply. He is the father of 3 children: Marion, Ophelia and Walter Scrutchings.

Always a lover of art, mainly water color, he finds joy in the creation of oil paintings as well. He remembers his 7th grade art instructor by the name of Mrs. Hoffenner. Mrs. Hoffenner realized his ability and therefore took great interest in his development. She stressed techniques such as, the free use of the mind and hands in the creation of his work.

Rev. Scrutchings expresses himself by totally involving himself into every piece of art he creates. He starts very early in the morning and works until late in the evening. His surroundings must be pleasant, as he prefers to work alone. Classical music plays an important part in the creation of his work. He is quoted as saying, "My most effective work comes by listening to what nature has to say."

His instruments are the brush and his fingers. In his opinion he considers the use of the pencil as a crime against art. He feels that drawing the work first then painting within the lines is a crime.

"Let God work through you." This is what Rev. Scrutchingts believes. How he receives this gift of God he keeps to himself, but he realized that art is an endless subject to him. He visits every art gallery, or museum whenever possible to study various paintings. He believes that every artist is great in their own respect.

Rev. Scrutchings received education at Wilberforce University and Northwestern University in the area of music education. He was ordained by the Westside Evangelistic Assoc. of the Church of God in Chicago, Ill,. by Elder J. A. Armstead and Rev. C. F. Thomas on Oct. 6, 1963.

Rev. Scrutchings has served as pastor of the Zarley Church of God in Joliet, Ill., and the Everlasting Church of God in Chicago, Ill. He has not retired. He is presently teaching Bible class in his neighborhood and enjoys playing gospel music on the piano and organ as well as singing. "God does it all, as well as gives it all." Rev. Scrutchings is quoted as saying, "In the Spirit it is given, in the Spirit it is done. Ask me how I did it-through obedience to God."
